Opioid abuse and overdose is currently one of the most significant threats to public health. The current opioid epidemic has affected the lives of countless individuals and families. Between January and June in 2018, there were 2,066 opioid-related deaths. Harm reduction strategies are central to combatting the current opioid epidemic.
Harm reduction strategies play a critical role in reducing the negative health impacts associated with opioid misuse and overdose. Federal, provincial and municipal governments have adopted harm reduction strategies to combat the opioid crisis, including expanding access to supervised consumption sites, overdose prevention sites, needle exchange programs and naloxone (an antidote for opioid overdoses).
